Cape York

Cape York

There is something truly special about Cape York, one of Australia’s most remote and remarkable destinations. From the rugged red dirt roads and towering termite mounds to lush tropical rainforests, crystal-clear waterfalls and spectacular coastlines, the landscapes are as diverse as they are beautiful.

At the very northern tip of mainland Australia, you will find breathtaking views across the Torres Strait, where islands, rich Indigenous culture and fascinating history add another layer to this incredible part of the country. Cape York is a destination full of adventure, natural beauty and unforgettable experiences, with something new to discover around every corner.

Why Cape York Is a Must-Visit Outback Destination

Cape York is one of Australia’s last great wilderness destinations, and somewhere everyone should experience at least once. From the red dirt roads and remote river crossings to tropical rainforests, beautiful waterfalls and untouched beaches, there is so much to discover along the way. But Cape York is about more than just the scenery.

It is a place rich in history and culture, where you can learn about the historic Overland Telegraph Line, discover the stories of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who have called this region home for thousands of years and experience the true remoteness of Far North Queensland. And of course, no visit is complete without standing at the northernmost tip of mainland Australia!

Iconic Attractions Included in Our Cape York Tours

The Tip of Cape York at Pajinka

This is the moment you travelled thousands of kilometres for. From Pajinka, we walk 45 to 60 minutes over a rocky headland to the sign marking the northernmost point of mainland Australia, the Coral Sea on one side and the Arafura on the other. Afterwards, enjoy a picnic lunch on Somerset Beach.

The Daintree Rainforest and Bloomfield Track

The Daintree Rainforest is one of the most incredible natural wonders of Far North Queensland, home to ancient trees, unique wildlife and lush tropical landscapes. We cross the Daintree River by ferry and discover the beauty of the world’s oldest surviving tropical rainforest, where elevated boardwalks take you through the heart of this remarkable ecosystem.

Further north, the famous Bloomfield Track winds through rugged rainforest and coastal scenery, offering spectacular views of where the rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef.

Quinkan Rock Art at Split Rock

Near Laura, we walk to the Split Rock galleries for a guided tour of ochre figures that have watched over this escarpment for thousands of years. The Quinkan galleries are held to be among the most significant rock art sites in the world, and your guide explains who painted them and why.

Fruit Bat Falls

Every Cape York traveller has a favourite stop, and for most of ours it is Fruit Bat Falls. Clear, cool, crocodile-free water spilling over sandstone into a swimming hole in the middle of the Heathlands. Bring your bathers for this one!

Weipa and the Gulf of Carpentaria

Located on the western coast of Cape York, Weipa is a fascinating destination known for its rich mining history, incredible wildlife and beautiful sunsets over the Gulf of Carpentaria. Home to one of the world’s largest bauxite mining operations, Weipa offers a unique insight into the region’s mining industry, with enormous haul trucks and impressive machinery.

Beyond the mines, the surrounding waterways are home to saltwater crocodiles and an abundance of birdlife, making an eco cruise a great way to explore the area. And as the day comes to an end, there is nothing quite like watching the sun set over the waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cape York?

The best time to visit Cape York is between June and September, during the dry season. The roads across the Peninsula close during the wet, so the dry is the only reliable window to travel to the Cape.

Travelling with Outback Aussie Tours means benefiting from 40 years of experience delivering well-organised, comfortable and informative outback journeys. Our tours are carefully paced, professionally hosted and designed to take the guesswork out of remote travel.

How many days do you need to see Cape York properly?
Eleven days is the sweet spot. Shorter trips tend to fly you in, run you to the Tip and fly you out again. Eleven days lets you travel the Peninsula overland and add the Torres Strait rather than skipping it.
Are your Cape York tours suitable for seniors?
Absolutely! Our Cape York tours are a great option for travellers with a moderate level of fitness. Some activities, including the walk to the Tip of Cape York, involve uneven terrain, so a reasonable level of mobility is required. Due to the nature of the destinations and activities, this tour is unfortunately not suitable for travellers who require a wheelchair or wheelie walker.
What is the best time of year to visit Cape York?
Between June and September, during the dry season. Roads across the Peninsula close during the wet.
Do your Cape York all-inclusive tours cover meals and accommodation?
Yes. Ten nights of ensuite accommodation, all meals as listed in the itinerary, every entry and activity on the program, ferry transfers and your flight from Horn Island to Cairns are included.
How far ahead should I book an Outback Aussie Tours Cape York holiday?
As early as you can. There are only six departures in 2027, and most of our Cape York guests book about a year in advance.
