Small-Group Touring Experience

Day 1: Friday - Cairns

Arrive in tropical Cairns, the perfect launch point for your Outback Queensland adventure. Tonight, meet your Savannah Guides Operator driver, host, and fellow guests over a relaxed welcome dinner at the Coral Hedge Brasserie Restaurant.

Overnight Rydges Esplanade, Cairns

Day 2: Saturday - Cobbold Gorge

Departing Cairns, we’ll follow the coastal route via Babinda before heading inland to Millaa Millaa Falls. Stroll the short rainforest path to view this magnificent, heritage-listed cascade as it drops into a pristine waterhole. Continue to Forty Mile Scrub National Park on the northern edge of the McBride Plateau for a short break in this unique pocket of dry rainforest. Arrive at Undara Experience for a picnic lunch, then join a Savannah Guide for an afternoon tour into the Undara Lava Tubes—part of one of the longest lava-tube cave systems in the world and the remnants of volcanic eruptions that began around 190,000 years ago. After the tour, travel west through Gulf Savannah country and pause in Georgetown, a classic goldfields-and-grazing service town with deep outback roots. Arrive at Cobbold Gorge Village in the early evening for check-in and dinner.

2 Nights Cobbold Gorge Village, Forsayth

Day 3: Sunday - Cobbold Gorge

Join experienced Savannah Guides for a tour of the remarkable Cobbold Gorge. Follow a guided walk to the escarpment and Australia’s first glass bridge, then cruise through the towering sandstone gorge, in an eco-friendly electric boat. Your afternoon is free to relax. Perhaps take a dip in the infinity pool or wander a bush trail before dinner at the Village.

Day 4: Monday - Richmond

Travel via Einasleigh Pub and Copperfield Gorge, where the river has carved striking basalt pools. Continue to the Lynd Junction Roadhouse, often billed as one of Australia’s smallest towns. Take in sweeping views from Porcupine Gorge Lookout, nicknamed Australia’s “Little Grand Canyon,” before heading west to Richmond. Late afternoon, visit Kronosaurus Korner, Australia’s premier marine fossil museum, to see rare relics of the ancient inland sea, from giant marine reptiles to fossil fish and shells

Overnight Ammonite Motel, Richmond

Day 5: Tuesday - Longreach

Head further west through open downs country and the Ayrshire Hills, a striking stretch of country on the approach to Winton. Explore the award-winning Waltzing Matilda Centre, the only museum dedicated to a song. Visit the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils. Join local dinosaur enthusiasts for a guided tour of the working Laboratory and Collection Room where these prehistoric giants are brought to life. Travel to Longreach, arriving late afternoon to settle into your accommodation.

2 Nights Saltbush Retreat, Longreach

Day 6: Wednesday - Longreach

Board the Great Darr River Rail Run, travelling by heritage rail motor across sweeping grasslands to the Darr River waterhole. Enjoy billy tea and homemade treats as your guide shares stories of bush tucker and traditional plant uses. Back in Longreach, you have the option to visit the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Qantas Founders Museum, or to explore downtown Longreach. Late afternoon join the Drover’s Sunset Cruise on the Thomson River then take your seat at Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show for a fabulous night under the stars.

Day 7: Thursday - Homeward

After breakfast, it’s time to farewell your travel companions and guides who’ve shared this epic Outback Queensland journey. Transfers are included to Longreach Airport or Railway Station for your onward travel.

  • Great Adventure Exceeds Expectations Just back from the Corner Country tour, which I did solo with some apprehension. However, the 22 people on Big Red Sand Dune (our bus) were great and we all got on well with lots of laughs on the way. Our tour leader was full of interesting information on the geography, geology, flora and fauna we saw and his offsider was helpful and couldn’t do enough to ensure the trip fulfilled our expectations. Accommodation and meals were fabulous and although we covered 4,200 km in 13 days, I never felt we were rushed. We stopped every couple of hours for a break and there was always something interesting to see. I’d recommend this tour to anyone with moderate fitness levels and am hoping to do another one with them next year.

  • Fantastic Experience We just completed the Corner Country Explorer tour and could not fault it. Everything was great from the booking experience to the post tour experience. The places visited and the talks by locals were excellent. The coach driver Darren and his wife and tour director Rachel were great and so much fun. All the meals and morning teas were included and a very good standard. Unfortunately we both contracted covid on the 2nd last day so could not experience the excursions on the last day however EVERYONE at Aussie Outback Tours did not hesitate to assist us from finding extended accommodation to picking up and delivering meals everyday and grocery items to our motel room. Also a very timely refund of our booked rail journey back to Brisbane. We cannot recommend this company enough. Worth every dollar it cost. Thanks Aussie Outback Tours

  • The tour could not have been better – it was excellent. The driver/host Andrew and hostess Paula were absolutely marvellous in their handling any/all matters that may have arisen during the trip not that there were many. The itinerary was followed, areas of interest explained, birds identified etc. Accommodation was superior in most towns as were the meals (in most cases, too much).   Communication was limited past Charleville Queensland but we always had tele and email at night time locations. The things we saw including Cameron Corner, Burke & Wills digging tree and burial sites were all heart-warming. Outback people were so very friendly and the fellow pax on the tour all gelled extremely well. We lost 3 tour members at Tibooburra due to illness but otherwise health was not of a concern. Opera in the outback at Winton was an enormous success for the locals and us I guess and the Governor and her minders were there also. Then the last area of Longreach was also most enjoyable even though we have been there a few times before.   My wife was able to enjoy all of the tour and off vehicle events notwithstanding that her second knee replacement was only done in Feb 23. If she needed any assistance, the team were already there to assist. Their expertise was beyond question.

  • Dear Mr and Mrs Smith. I really have to address this to you as i feel the questionnaire that we completed at the end of our trip to the Corner Country on the 3rd July 2023 is not enough to express my gratitude to Andrew and Paula, (we called mum and dad). What an asset to your company these two wonderful people. We learnt so much from their commentary along the way through the outback plus  the trust i had in their company. I did not feel concerned in any way during the 13 days in the outback. I really can not express enough, my appreciation  to Andrew and Paula. Also to the team behind our organised holiday to the Corner. My first trip and hopefully not my last. Many Thanks and Best Wishes Heather M, NSW

  • Corner Country Explorer If you want to help the people of the outback, plus see some of the towns in the middle of nowhere but you don't want to drive, I can really recommend travelling with Outback Aussie Tours. We couldn't fault anything, the guides were helpful with lots of local knowledge and they didn't exhaust you by talking too much. The accommodation was terrific, clean and quiet. The food was excellent and the people in the remote country towns were so grateful for our visit. They said we helped sustain seven people by staying at their motels. It was one of the best holidays I've ever been on and I had no idea how much I didn't know about our country. It was also very sad to see and speak to the property owners because of the hardships they face, especially the drought affected properties. The guided tours of towns were very informative, thank you so much to Outback Aussie Tours.
