The Outback, Season by Season
The Outback has a way of giving every traveller a different experience and a story to take home. Each season brings something special, from the golden landscapes of autumn after the summer rains to winter’s endless blue skies and star-filled nights, where the Milky Way puts on an incredible show. Spring brings beautiful amber sunsets and the final tours of the year, while summer is one of the Outback’s best-kept secrets, with dramatic storms rolling across the plains and that unmistakable smell of rain in the air.
After 40 years of guiding travellers from our home in Longreach, we’ve learnt that the real question isn’t whether to come. It’s when. Here’s how our country changes through the year, and which 2027 guided holidays will put you right in the heart of it.
Autumn (March to May): The Country Comes Alive
As the summer heat begins to ease, the Outback comes to life in a whole new way. Waterholes still glisten from the wet season, birdlife gathers along the Thomson River, and the afternoons bring a beautiful golden glow across the landscape, making it a beautiful time to experience the Outback
Autumn also brings one of the outback’s most extraordinary tours, the Festival of Outback Opera. Picture world-class voices rising over Camden Park Station as the sunset bleeds crimson into violet, then a glass of bubbles aboard the Champagne Train as it carries you through the dusk to the Opera Ball.
Here is a list of our guided overland holiday tours that depart in Autumn:

Winter (June to August): Peak Season
Winter is one of the best times to explore the Outback, with cooler days and the dry season opening up some of Australia’s most incredible destinations. Journey north to Cape York, where you can take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of Fruit Bat Falls and stand at the northernmost tip of mainland Australia.
In the Gulf Savannah, enjoy a sunset drink on a remote sand island overlooking the Gulf of Carpentaria, or head to Corner Country to watch the colours of Big Red come to life as the sun sets over the Simpson Desert. Winter is also our most popular time to travel, with these tours often the first to sell out, so we recommend booking early to secure your spot!

Spring also marks the final months of our touring season, making it your last chance to join one of our longer overland adventures before we wrap up for summer. If exploring the Outback has been on your bucket list, now is the time to make it happen!

Summer (December to February): The Outback’s Best-Kept Secret
Summer in the Outback might be hot, but it brings a whole different experience that many travellers never get to see. Afternoon storms roll across the plains, the first summer rains bring the landscape back to life and the quieter towns give you the chance to explore at your own pace. It is a great time to discover Longreach, with air-conditioned transfers between iconic attractions like the Qantas Founders Museum and the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, where you can enjoy the experience while keeping cool.
As the day winds down, sit back and relax on the top deck of the M.V. Longreach Explorer for a beautiful sunset cruise along the Thomson River.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I book my outback holiday?
As early as you can, especially for winter. June to August departures fill first, and many of our guests book a year ahead. Booking early also secures Early Bird savings on selected 2027 departures, while seats last.
What should I pack for an outback tour?
Pack in layers. Winter days are warm but nights can be surprisingly chilly, so bring a warm jacket alongside your hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes.
When is the best season for stargazing in the outback?
Winter brings the clearest, crispest night skies. Our Corner Country Explorer includes the Charleville Cosmos Centre Outback Stargazing Tour, and Legendary Longreach & Winton features the Gondwana Observatory night experience in Winton.
Which tours suit travellers with lower fitness levels?
Legendary Longreach & Winton, Saltbush Longreach Retreat and our Opera packages involve minimal walking. Cape York & Torres Strait requires a moderate level of fitness, including the rocky walk to the Tip of Australia. Please talk to our team about any mobility needs before booking.
How do I get to Longreach to start my tour?
Most of our Longreach tours are timed to meet the Spirit of the Outback rail journey or the QantasLink flight from Brisbane. Your Savannah Guides Operator driver and host will meet you on arrival and transfer you to your accommodation.
